I've had some time since the results to reflect on what has been happening around the country. There was a vote, one side won. Fair enough. We are lucky that we live in a country where we are all allowed to vote.
What I have been horrified by is the sudden increase in racist attacks since the referendum. Even I have been asked when I'm moving back to Spain.
This is why I spend #GetOutside time in the mountains. Up there, we are all equal. Regardless of your gender, race, nationality etc...
When I'm in the mountains, I know that YOU have my back and I have yours. Yes that's right, you, the person I have never met before in my life. I know that should I have an accident, you will help me back to safety. This is the unspoken code. You only ever meet friends in mountains.
When was the last time you went hiking and didn't end up talking to a stranger? More than the usual "hi" - a proper conversation. I actually can not remember the last time I didn't have a proper conversation with a stranger on a mountain.
I remember setting off on a hike in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales. On that trip I ended up standing in heavy horizontal rain for 10 minutes laughing about the whole thing with a complete stranger as we crossed paths.
I remember doing the fun scramble up Tryfan in North Wales where we spent the whole climb passing and being passed by the same group. On the harder sections we would help their weaker members get up. They would then help the weaker members in my group by taking their bags up on a rope.
There was no need to ask for help. It's human nature. We help each other. So why does this break down as soon as we get into towns and cities? Do we forget who we are? Let's try to take the mountain way back to our homes.
So next time you #GetOutside, regardless of whether you're walking down your High Street, taking a stroll through your local park or heading up on an epic climb in the Scottish mountains, remember, "I've got your back".
